Right had some feedback and decided to change my character builds a slight bit.

Here is the new List:

Right the differences here are purely in the characters. My General has a lot more punch (with a -4AS) and my Chief has slightly less punch (4 S4 attacks, just no killing blow).

The Chief doesnt have a terradon which means he can fly into units and join them if he is some enemy's crosshairs. It means he cant drop rocks :( but he still has 4+AS so should be able to beat a warmachine crew and a lone wizard. Having M6 means he can fly close to a wood and then walk in, meaning he is safe from harm. If there are no warmachines/wizards (WoC for example) then he can just fly over and march block a big scary unit of knights and let me move my sallies in and flame them to death.

The Scar-Vet now doesnt strike last which means he might be able to stick around more. He still has 4 S5 attacks that do a -4AS. That will be good against a heavy armoured unit such as knights. I would have liked to give him the Hornet Sword (ASF) but it was too many points. The Mirror Shield still is my only magic defense but I think it could potentially kill a wizard the 1st time it is used. Also it means I have 2 DD to protect my other units as it makes it almost invulnerable to the magic you see at 1000 points. If the enemy has no magic then its only 30 points (cheaper than a scroll caddy).

It does also mean that it costs less money. I will see if I can convert a Scar-Vet from the Saurus Box set and I can buy 2 Chiefs for £6.40. There are only 3 or 4 models and there is only 1 I dont like (the Blowpipe one). I can use them as Skink Priests as well (dont really like that model) and If I get the Blowpipe one just paint it as a Chameleon skinks and use it as a Stalker/Oxoyotl. More Value for money!!! Now with this army all I need to buy is: 1 Saurus box set, Chiefs, Salamander = £33.99. Thats pretty darn cheap! I might go into a GW and ask if I can look at the Saurus Sprues to see if I can make a Scar Vet (as well as a Champ/2 Standards/2 Musos). Also I want to find out how much the 5th Ed Saurus Shields are as I could paint them Bleached Bone and it would look really cool.

Right now lets go through the different phases of the game.

Movement

This list is quite mobile. You have a flying skink of doom (FSOD) flying 20" a turn and march blocking, war machine hunting, mage killing an being a nuisance. You have a slow core of 2 saurus units but fast flankers in the Salamander and the skinks that can draw units into combat with the Saurus. The Chamo skinks are very mobile and will hinder the enemies movement immediately as they are scouts. The Cohorts are there to take a table quarter and maybe do some redirecting from charges.

Magic

Again I have no offensive or defensive magic. Magic heavy forces can be a big problem for me but I have a FSOD to kill some mages (KB is very nice) and I also have some Chamo skinks that can mage hunt. One Saurus unit is protected from Magic Missiles (due to the Mirror Shield) and I may screen the other unit with skirmishers if its a magic heavy list.

Shooting

This army has more than the previous one. I may give the FSoD some kind of missile weapon to take advantage of his BS5 but points are scarce. The skirmishers will add some firepower when the battle lines meet as they can dish out 20 Poisoned shots a turn which can decimate a unit. The Chamo skinks will be very important as they can whittle down units before combat commences, take out warmachine crews and attack units shooting at my saurus. The Salamander will make a big difference with its -3AS to cavalry and also it causes a panic check on just one wound. This can fracture my enemys battle line, helping me win.

Combat

This unit is still a Combat list. The 2 units of saurus can put together 50 S4 hits (not including Scarvet with 4 S7 attacks). That can seriously beat down on an army. The skinks can be servicable flankers (taking away rank bonus will help CR a lot) and the Salamanders will be better off shooting but can scrap a bit as well. The FSoD now has KB which makes killing easier (on a 6 to hit it auto-wounds and if AS is failed they die) esp wizards and can take out a warmachine crew on his own. The chamo skinks are there to shoot but if needs be can charge a unit of archers/war machine crew and tie them up for a few turns.

Cost

This is a bonus. I can convert a Saurus into a ScarVet if needed and the Chamo skinks can just be regular skinks with a different paintjob (I was thinking some kind of black camouflage). This means all I have to buy is a box of saurus, a Terradon and a salamander. This saves money and makes use of more of the models I own. On http://www.giftsforgeeks.org.uk/ that would come to £31.50 (plus P+P). This is pretty cheap.

Im gonna put this list on both LOs (Lustria Online and Librarium Online) and see what feedback I get.

Right, I put the list on LO and got some great feedback, from this I have made a few changes to the list that should make it more adaptable (and cheaper)

Right lets break this down into each phase of the game:
Movement
This army is more mobile than the old one. The mixed unit can march 12" and be a useful flanking unit and be a good "hammer" unit. the skirmishers are great to bait and flee with (especially with their increased Ld) and so I am a lot less plodding.
Magic
No offensive magic, not having a 100+point T2 character with no armour on the field isn't a huge worry. Priest on EoG would be nice but I think at 1000 points thats too much points. Magic defense is a worry as if I face a DE or VC army I could be severely outmatched. The Mirror shield protects one unit from MM and hopefully the TSoD (Terradon skink of doom) can shoot/drop rocks the enemy wizards to death or at least shoot/drop rocks on the unit the wizard is in just to annoy my opponent.
Shooting
I now have some! The Chief with his BS5 should be hitting on 4+ (movement, multiple shots) and maybe 5+ if he wizard is alone (or skirmishers) but 3 S5 hits can do wonders to a unit of shades of a T3 lone sorceress. I wonder if that counts as poisonous but I have to get the new book. He also can drop rocks which auto hit and cause D3 S5 hits. That can take out a skirmish unit or fast cavalry in one turn! The Skinks add some poisoned shooting as well but I dont think that will be too much of a factor
Combat
Right, the Saurus units are now 18 strong (with general) and will be arranged 6x3. This means one unit can dish out 25 attacks, the other 27 (4 at S7) and have enough guys to take a few wounds and still dish out some pain (even if the whole front rank die they still get 12A at S4). The problem with spears is that they wont be able to use their shields so will only have 5+ saves. The mixed unit will have 6 S3 attacks and then 6 S6 ones. Hopefully this unit will swing round and get a flank charge, or could even do a bit of baiting itself (at Ld7 it should be alright). Scar-Vet isnt a combat monster but 4 S7 attacks sound pretty good.

I still have some decisions to make between
a) Dropping skirmisher + GW for Venom of Firefly Frog (magical + Poison)
b) Dropping skirmisher for musician/standard in Skink/Krox unit.
Dont know about these ones but I'll play a bit (maybe) and see what is better.

Now moneywise its a better list and this is why. I own 20 Saurus and 36 skinks, all from 5th ed. With this army I need to buy 1 box of new Saurus, 2 Krox, Tiqtaqtoe (same price as terradon rider but looks badass) and Chakax (cheaper than old blood but looks MUCH better). This shopping list comes to a total of £56.25 plus P+P (that includes army book) from www.giftsforgeeks.org.uk and I think thats pretty good for a basic army.

Right, I have done 1 (or 2) lists that have no saurus, just lots of skinks and Krox. Now I will go the other way round: a saurus heavy force with no skinks! I have 2 lists (1000 and 1500 pts) but I have decided to do them one at a time this time.

Right so this army looks pretty fun. Has only 3 units at M4 so I probably will be outmaneouvred and so will have to take a few charges, thats where the TG (2+AS in combat) and the Saurus (21 S4 attacks) come to the fore.
This army has no magic defense when you first look (no scroll caddy) but it can put up quite a fight. First you have the mirror shield, now prob THE most improved item (I know there aren't many) in the list. It now works on a 2+ meaning in the first turn as your enemy casts fireball, you dont try to dispel, you roll a 2+, wizard promptly dies. Thats all for 30 points! Its not one use, and it means that you can use your DD for non-magic missile attacks. Once your opponent sees that they wont attack your TG with magic at all.
The other anti-magic item in the army is the Plaque of Dominion. This item has changed completely this ed (its a banner) and causes ALL wizards within LoS and 18" of the unit to test for stupidity. This means that sometimes you dont even need to use your DD as your opponent is stupid.
The final bit of magic defense (and general harassment) is my new FSoD. The Chief now has BS5, meaning he hits on a 2+ with no modifiers. 3S5 hits should get rid of a wizard and also the terradon can drop rocks (D3 S5 hits) on a unit to cause some damage without getting in combat. He will mostly work on his own so his new higher Ld of 7 should help. The Enchanted Shield is just to keep him alive a bit from shooting, he has a 3+ save so that should be ok. He will be good against skirmishers, war machines and the like and can also march block. The new Terradons can now land in forests so that means he can hind and not get shot at too much.
The main problem with this army would be against shooting, no skink shields means TG ans Saurus taking hits until combat. This kinda sucks but I don't see where I could get 70 points (10 skirmishers) from without severely disabling the units.

Also worked out how much money I would have to spend to make this army and its only £43.50 (plus P+P) from www.giftsforgeeks.org.uk

So there we go, onto 1500 Points.

Well this is my first idea list. This means its just a quick throw-down of what i could do. Points costs are not exact (as I dont know them) but we will see what happens.

The General. 6 S5 WS5 attacks are not to be sniffed at. Also durable with T5 and save of 1+. And mobile too!
Skink Priest: lvl 1, 2 Dispell Scrolls - 115
Basic Scrollcaddy magic defense. Just incase I come up against any VC or DE lists with wizards.
16 Skinks, 2 Krox, Full Command - 203 (guess)
16 Skinks, 2 Krox, Full Command - 203 (guess)
Backbone of army. Very mobile with might of Krox and numbers and static CR of skinks, may also cause fear but im not sure.
10 Skinks, musician - 55 (guess)
Extra points, can line up 1 rank and be a screen, or just pop into a flank and negate CR.
6 CoR, Full Command - 260
The hammer. General's unit should pump out 19 attacks (including mounts) and cause fear. Expensive, but tough.

Pros: Mobile, fear, good static CR with skinks, magic defense, hard hitting.
Cons: Skinks are cannon-fodder, Price (in money and points), lack of units that can take a charge or good round of shooting.

So anyway those are my thoughts. I think this would be a fun list to play as it can realy get around the board, and the Steg should be a massie distraction as my Priest delivers thunderbolts galore. If this army gets the charge, it will rock. But this army cnt take oo many punches. EoG will be used defensively (ward save) until we get into combat then it will be used offensively (D6 S4 no AS hits to every enemy unit within 2D6") If there isnt too much shooting or magic (against OnG) then I will lower all the spells cost by 1. This should make my lvl 3 magic user pretty dominant.

Ill post these on LO and see what response I get. I'll put up more static lists next time.

New Year, New Book

So my ineptitude at painting, girlfriend's loathing of geekiness and lack of money had completely destroyed my idea of a lizardman force. But I have turned over a new (geekier) leaf and with the new Lizardman book I will have more impetus to finally get a force bigger than 180 half painted points.

So the new changes to the Lizardmen book:
Slann are cheaper but are still pretty good, if not as durable
Carnies are no large targets to Old Bloods are stil good
TG now special, ItP and Stubborn if with Slann, cheaper
Skink "cohorts" cheaper and can have Krox
Skink skirmishers more expensive
Saurus cheaper
Krox got nerfed - S6
Terradons cheaper and different
STEGADONS ARE SPECIAL
Engine of the Gods (kick ass priest upgrade)
Salamanders have changed
New "Razordons" are basically new salamanders.

So how this will affect my army choices:
Slann is still the Lord choice I want, but now it is cheaper (woop)
NEED to get a stegadon with EotG. Means you can have lvl3 caster at <2000 points!
Potential for fast moving army of skinks + Krox instead of plodding Saurus
Need TG for my Slann
Potential use of small Terradons unit
Krox units dont seem to be as good.
Magic items are generally unimpressive.

I will put up a few "Idea lists" that will be 1000 - 1500 points. I doubt if anyone has ever read this but it will give me a good few ideas to build off of.

Right, I finished painting my 10 skinks and Ive learnt something. I suck at painting. Apart from that things are going well. For the skinks I undercoated the weapons with black before going over them with bleached bone. This wasnt a good idea and Ive learnt my lesson as for the Saurus Im painting the bone straight on the white undercoat. The Saurus are going really well as Ive done 5 or 6 of them and half way through another 4/5. Im painting Blazing Orange everywhere and then doing Chaos Black scales and drybrushing with Fortress Grey. Im having such little paint on the brush it looks like Im highlighting!! If you put too much paint on you just end up painting them Fortress Grey which I have now learnt is the colour of unpainted plastic.

I tried taking some photos on my mum's camera but it has short sightedness and cant properly focus on the models and so my phine has actually become a better camera :S

The thing is that the CD to install my phone onto my laptop is in southampton so I cant upload photos. This means I have to take all my models to soton which could be risky but it has to be done. By the end of tomorrow I should have 10 Saurus and 10 skinks, which technically comes to 180 points which is enough to get by in Tale of Painters. I just hope I can keep up.

Oh and i tried basing with the lava idea but I need some sand otherwise it looks like I just painted some lines on a plain base.

The Paints Came!!!

Right Im probably about halfway through 10 skinks after a couple of hours of painting today, Ive done the skin, the crest and the equpiment I just need to touch them up and do the bases.

Ive signed up for Tale of Painters on LO. This could be interesting as I only have my mum's camera (apart from my phone) and I dont think that is linked up to the computer. I will try to do that tomorrow (hopefully when all my skinks are done).

My paint scheme looks ok so far, the only problem is that the old skink models are very closed in posture-wise, meaning it's quite hard for a shit painter like me to do much. Also the sculpt is pretty rubbish as there are just squares on the model that I have no idea what they are, so I paint them bone.

They look ok but if the bases come out how I want them too then that would make the army look pretty sweet.

Ill post up my "painting plan" for 200 points each month for Tale of Painters (first deadline is 1st May).

Pretty similar tactics to 1000 points. JSOD in smaller saurus unit to begin with before leaping out. General in other saurus unit. Krox and Salamanders on each flank. Skinks screening, flanking, marchblocking etc. Skink Priest will almost definitely have to use the Diadem defensively so he will stay at he back and not die.

Ive come up with some slightly different schemes for the Krox and Salamanders. The Saurus and Skinks are Orange with Black scales, the Salamanders will be yellow with black scales and the Krox can be red. Kinda sticking with the same Lava theme but they are different species so they should be different colours. In my opinion of course.

My general idea of tactics is to put the ScarVet in the big Saurus Unit and put that in the middle of my army. On each side of that would be the other saurus unit and the salamanders. The skinks will screen and generally be a nuisance. The Skink Priest will stay back (hopefully on a hill) depending on what spell he gets (if he gets Portent of Far he will go near the battle line). If he has to use the diadem defensively most of the time then he will just hide at the back and try not to die.

Now I have just under 2 weeks until my holiday is over, should I order the Salamanders now hoping they arrive in time and I cant undercoat them? Or get them sent to my uni address? Or just accept that I cant do them before the summer (which would suck)

Im still waiting for my paints, they were shipped out by giftsforgeeks.org.uk on thursday grrrr.

Now I know for next time to pay extra for the 1st class post.

Im in a bit of a dilemma with my 2000 Point list. The Skink Chief is there to kill wizards, but for 20 more points I could have a JSOD (jaguar saurus of death) who can move 18" rather than 20 and be a MUCH harder hitter.

Also someone said that 9 Chameleon skinks are just too big a unit, I kinda see your logic now as they may even be too big to fit in a forest. Im also thinking about dropping the Sun Standard of Chotec (though I want to play a game with it first). A Skink Priest with a diadem of Power will also be good as I can stick him on a hill and use telepathy to get LOS on everything, the Diadem also gives me tremendous flexibility. The priest costs 100 points (Level 1 with Diadem) which is 7 points more than the chief. I would drop the chameleon skinks down to 7 and use the 23 odd points on more skinks.

I just dont know what to do! Apart from wait for paint of course...

Slight Change of Plan

OK I have made a very slight change of plan, one of my saurus units will be 16 strong rather than 20, this is because I have 20 Saurus and the box is 16. Thus meaning I dont have to buy another box for 4 saurus. I have made up the cost by adding 3 more chameleon skinks, bringing that unit up to 9.

Im still waiting for the paints but they have been shipped so Its all up to the Post Office now...

I will write up army lists for 1000 and 1500 points tomorrow and post them up, they will be similar and gradually build up to my 2000 point force.

Oh and by the way, the 2nd Gen Slann gets a free power dice tfor every spell, just to clear that up.

Right, of the 2000 point army this is what I currently own.

20 Saurus (no command)
32 Skinks (with shortbows)

SO once I get some paints (should get 6 paints from www.giftsforgeeks.com soon) and some brushes I can paint these up.

The reason I even have these models is due to the fact I own the 5th edition (yeah you read that right) starter set. This is one of the reasons I chose Lizardmen as I have some models (and they are a lot easier to paint/put together/carry around) than Bretonnian Knights.

I have some paint brushes but they are probably pretty mangled so I might get some new ones if/when I go into kingston. I would quite like to go this week as the Easter Holidays havent hit schools yet so I can go into the arts store and maybe even GW without being hideously judged as a geek or a paedophile.

I do have some pots of paints but they have all run dry or stuck themselves shut as they havent been opened since about 2001.

The paints I ordered were: Blazing Orange, Chaos Black, Fortress Grey, Bleached Bone, Sunburst Yellow, Blood Red.

My paint scheme is going to be Blazing Orange skin (maybe highlighted with sunburst yellow) and Chaos Black scales (highlighted with fortress grey). The weapons and shields will all be basecoated with chaos black and painted with bleach bone. The cloth/eyes will be blood red.

The theme for my lizardmen army is gonna be lava/volcanoes. This means my bases will be black but have little streams of lava being red with orange with yellow. This will look cool and the bone weapons will also look pretty cool in my opinion.

The good thing about having so many skinks is that I can buy a box of 24 and have loads spare. My plan is to do 14 Blowpipes 10 javelins. This means that I can just put 5 javelin skinks in a squad and the opponent knows they have javelins (even if half of them have bows), same iwth blowpipes. The reason that Im doing more blowpipes is that Im going to use the blowpipe skinks as Chameleon Skinks. This means that I dont have to buy any and make up for the surplus of skinks that I will have. I will probably paint these up similar to the other skinks but put black camo on their bodies and maybe even just have the fin appearing in a river of lava, that'd be pretty cool.

Right, I am going to use this blog to say how my Lizardmen army is coming along.

Once (if ever) that is done I will hten go onto other projects that are warhammer/40k related.
